Overview

AGA partnered with the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition (ASPEN) to celebrate ASPEN’s Malnutrition Awareness Week and educate health care professionals on the important topic of malnutrition, a common condition seen in GI practice.

This webinar explored unique challenges such as sarcopenic obesity and highlighted the advantages of assessing body composition, muscle integrity and the use of indirect calorimetry. This session also served as a brief primer for gastroenterologists to recognize malnutrition in their patients and clinical states to keep in mind.

Learning objectives

  1. Recognize the importance of malnutrition.
  2. Understand how to screen and diagnose sarcopenic obesity.
  3. Understand the methods to assess body composition in clinical practice.
  4. Recognize the use of indirect calorimetry and predictive equations to assess metabolic needs in common disease states (ex. Pancreatitis/IBD flare).
