Hepatic encephalopathy (HE) is an urgent clinical reality and a leading cause of hospitalization in patients with cirrhosis. This session will review the diagnosis and management of HE in patients with cirrhosis, addressing both acute treatment and strategies for secondary prevention.
Learning objectives:
- Differentiate compensated vs. decompensated cirrhosis.
- Understand complications of decompensated cirrhosis, with a focus on HE.
- Describe the pathophysiology of HE, the diagnosis of HE, and the differentiation of the HE grades.
- Provide proper management strategies for the management of a patient with overt HE acutely and long-term (secondary prophylaxis).
